SHSM Sector Partner Experience
HeadsupCAN & Laurentian University Kinesiology Department
HeadsupCAN and Laurentian University’s Kinesiology Department are partnering to deliver a full-day, certified Sector Partner Experience (SPE) for Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) students in the Health & Wellness and Sport sectors. Hosted at Laurentian University, the day will explore concussion recovery through education, hands-on activities, and collaborative problem-solving.
Students will learn about the fundamentals of concussion recovery and the physical, psychological, and social factors that can shape the recovery experience. Through interactive activity stations, students will explore different tools and approaches used in concussion recovery while gaining exposure to kinesiology, research, and health-related career pathways.
The day will conclude with an Innovation Challenge guided by the ICE Learning Framework. Students will work in teams to design an ideal concussion recovery journey, identify key challenges and supports along the way, and develop practical solutions that could help a young person better navigate their recovery.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this Sector Partner Experience, students will:
Understand the psychosocial factors influencing recovery from injury
Understand the fundamentals of concussion recovery
Exposure to recovery tools treating different aspects of concussion recovery
Collaborate in an Innovation Challenge guided by the ICE Learning Framework

Why This Program Matters
Students build a deeper understanding of concussion recovery, exploring the physical, psychological, and social factors that can influence recovery and wellbeing.
Students experience kinesiology and concussion research in action through hands-on activities, exposing them to tools, technologies, and approaches used in research and practice.
Students explore diverse career pathways in kinesiology, healthcare, rehabilitation, research, and other health and wellness fields.
Students learn to connect evidence with real-world challenges, understanding how research and knowledge can be translated into practical supports for people recovering from concussion.
Students strengthen transferable skills in critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and applied problem-solving by working together to design solutions through the Innovation Challenge.
