 Our Concussion awareness shsm PROGRAM

Our education program engages with students and athletes to inspire peer-to-peer learning opportunities (reach ahead). All concussion education materials are sourced from the most reputable sources related to concussions, and the content is brought to life through our unique case study break out sessions and multimedia presentation style. Students will leave the concussion education program with a proof of completion certificate for concussion education and awareness that can be added to any resume.

SHSM Offering

The HeadsupCAN Concussion Awareness Education Program is designed for students currently in the Specialist High Skills Major program. As a recognized elective for students in the Health & Wellness Major, this program offers a Proof of Completion Certificate upon completing this Concussion Awareness education session which will go towards the students’ goal of receiving a RED SEAL with their high school diploma.hatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

 
 

STUDENT BENEFITS

Students will receive a comprehensive tutorial on the major aspects of Concussion.

Interactive Learning through the use of case studies, and exercises that assist in concussion recovery.

Students will also have the opportunity to receive a Proof of Completion Certificate for Concussion Awareness that will give them a SHSM credit.

Half day Session

HALF DAY - In person or virtual

SHSM Students participating in a half day will receive:

  • Comprehensive knowledge on Concussions.

  • Interactive learning (case studies, quizzes, discussion).

  • “Concussion Education and Awareness” Quiz.

Note: All students who pass the quiz will receive a Proof of Completion Certificate.

Full day session

FULL DAY - in person

SHSM Students participating in a full day will receive:

  • Comprehensive knowledge on Concussions.

  • Interactive learning (case studies, quizzes, discussion).

  • “Concussion Education and Awareness” Quiz.

  • Create their very own Peer-To-Peer awareness campaign.

    • This campaign will serve as the SHSM students Reach Ahead credit.

Note: All students who pass the quiz will receive a Proof of Completion Certificate.

 

Meet The Team

 

Seth Mendelsohn

Co-Founder

After experiencing a concussion in high school playing football, Seth dealt with overwhelming challenges in his return to learn which led to various mental health complications in his life. Now, he has transformed his experience to an educational resource for current students with the goal of ensuring students get the proper information on this complex injury. With a background in marketing, Seth has been an innovator in the Concussion space leading multiple awareness campaigns that connected community organizations from across Ontario.

 

Ryan Sutton, MA

Co-Founder

Ryan has sustained 8 concussions throughout his life and with each injury came new challenges and symptoms. His personal experience has fuelled a passion for teaching others about the injury and contributed to the establishment of HeadsupCAN. Ryan has since continued his path of learning by receiving a Master’s Degree at Brock University and writing a thesis project called “The Sport Related Concussion Experience”. He has also completed the Knowledge Translation Professional Certificate (KTPC) from Sick Kids and the University of Toronto School of Medicine to further his passion and skill set for education and knowledge mobilization.

 

Emma Pownall

Research & Education Lead

Emma is a recent graduate of the Bachelors of Science Kinesiology program at Trent University. Her passion for concussions stemmed from watching friends around her have challenging recoveries with little to no guidance or resources. She has also been personally affected by concussions during her career as a ski racer and today as a student. Emma did her undergrad thesis on Assessing Executive Functioning and Eye Movement Performance in Concussions. She is continuing her education and love for research at Trent University, pursuing a Master’s in Psychology growing her undergrad work in hopes to make a positive change to the research community and concussion landscape.
